Recycling Made Even Easier at the Duncan Depot

If you’ve visited our Island Return It Duncan depot recently, you’ll have noticed some big changes. The depot has made some significant upgrades, most specifically the installation of a Reverse Vending Machine (technology from Norway). This RVM counts and sorts your ready-to-drink beverage containers for you! Just bring your refundable containers inside the depot (using a cart provided in the parking lot), and step up to one of the 8 stalls and load your returnables into the machine (some big items don’t fit in the machine – take those up to the cashier for your refund). After you are done, the machine will issue a receipt with a break down. Take this voucher to the Cash Machine near the doors to receive your refund. Easy peasy.

We are excited thinking about the possibilities that this new technology affords us in the Cowichan Valley. The way we see it, now even more people can recycle, and more easily.

For instance, we are launching a new Return-It Express Service at the Duncan depot. Now that the RVM is humming along, you can now drop off your returnables (during business hours) and the staff will sort and count your returnables for you. Your refund will be sent to your account (see instructions to sign up for this amazing service below).
This express service will really help those people and businesses that don’t have a lot of time or adequate staffing to handling their recycling. We imagine there are plenty who would be happy for this service, and it might just kick start a new interest in recycling for some.
We also already offer commercial pick up services, so if you are interested to see if that could work for your business or organization, please send us an email with your information to enroll@islandreturnit.com and we will help you explore your best options.
Here’s how you can sign up for this Express Service:
1.  Create an online account at islandreturnit.ca/express prior to your visit
2.  When you bring your recycling into the Duncan depot, type your phone number into the Express kiosk
3.  You will be asked for the phone number that is associated to the account each time you use the express service
4.  Enter the number of bags you are dropping off and print your tags
5.  Tag and scan each bag. Use only transparent bags please (brands that offer these are: Glad, Western Family, Life, Safeway, No Name, and HDX)
6.  Deposit your bags in the designated Express Drop off area
7.  Clean refundables accepted only, no garbage, no waste please
8.  Your payment will be deposited in your account within 10 business days (you will receive an email when your batch has been processed and your payment is ready).
Note: Other recycling can still be brought to the depot as usual. Looking towards the building, on the left side, there is now an indoor recycling zone where you can continue to recycle electronics, small appliances, glass jars, plastic bags, batteries, styrofoam, etc and it’s all free.

The RVM looks to be well received, we’ve noticed people are really getting the hang of it. We are excited to see how much more recycling can divert from the landfill.

We look forward to helping you soon at the Duncan depot.
