Well once again, here we are. The holiday season is upon us. This time of the year means different things to different people. It could be time with family, time off work (oh yeah!), or time to make a fresh start. But one thing is common to all traditions: the most wonderful time of the year can easily become the most wasteful time of the year! Don’t let it happen to you. This year, make a few simple changes to reduce your holiday waste. [caption id="attachment_490" align="alignright" width="231"] Christmas light bulbs (photo credit: Bubbels)[/caption] We all waste food at one time or another, but during the holidays this can increase by obscene amounts. This year, focus on the quality of the food you eat, not the quantity. Treat your loved ones to one decadently expensive box of chocolates instead of mountains of sugary, waxy junk. Make meals together from scratch to reduce the...

School’s back in full swing (after a bumpy start), which also means it’s fundraising season again!  Chocolates, anyone?  Cookies?  Magazines?  Entertainment Books?!!   [caption id="attachment_480" align="alignleft" width="271"] Photo credit: Cnunes62[/caption] But what if you’re looking to make some money for your organization and save the planet at the same time?  For this, nothing beats a good old fashioned bottle drive.  Except, in order to make yours successful it might be time to do away with the “old fashioned” and bring your bottle drive into the 21st century!     Here are four steps to help make your bottle drive efficient, profitable, and fun: STEP ONE: ORGANIZE Form a small group of people willing to take initiative and delegate tasks to each person in the group.  For example, have one person in charge of advertising, one person in charge of volunteer recruitment, and someone else in charge of sorting the collected containers.  Choose a leader, having one point of...

This past Christmas when we threw our annual holiday party (which was awesome!) and we presented everyone on the Island Return It team with a special gift. A gift that meant more to us than a bottle of wine or a book or anything else we could have dreamed up. This year we wanted to give the gift of nourishment not just to our employees but their families too. So everyone got a chicken. [caption id="attachment_172" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Image Credit: www.simplebites.net[/caption] Promoting Health and Hope We choose to purchase the chickens from the Hope Farm in the Cowichan Valley for a few reasons: 1) We wanted to support our neighbors Hope Farm is located close to the Island Return It head office in Duncan and we love the "Buy Local" movement and want to participate. Promoting the products and services available in our communities is important to us, as we live and work in them too. 2)...

At Island Return It we live, work and breath recycling and sustainability. It's in our genes and our company has a long history on Vancouver Island, did you know that we have been operational for 18 years? Making recycling as easy and dare I say fun for consumers is what drives us. In Sidney and Esquimalt in particular this commitment is illustrated by our 5 star rating. Island Return it is proud to say that those two facilities of ours are the only two depots in the Victoria area that have qualified for such a high rating. We understand that you can take your recycling anywhere, but we hope that you choose to recycle with the company that is setting the standard for cleanliness, customer service and efficiency. Community Involvement Something else that is near and dear to us is community involvement. We sponsor many local teams, clubs and organizations, we fund raise...

Last year in the Cowichan Valley bottle drives raised over $95,000. That's a lot of empty bottles and cans and that's only one of the 5 communities that Island Return it is located in. Community involvement is really important to us, at Island Return It, helping and supporting local organizations is a special way that we can help give back. When you register your bottle drive with us (whichever location that is nearest to you) you get FULL REFUNDS on all empty ready to drink beverage containers. We provide support and guidance to help you make the most of your fundraiser and we help promote your event through our social media channels. Supporting our communities is priority #1 for us. We love nothing more than to participate in a school or team bottle drive that raises money for a good cause while keeping the money in our communities. As with anything, it's important to...
