30 Jan 5 Ways to Make Recycling the Easiest Chore You Do
We get it, recycling can be messy and sticky and even stinky so we would like to offer you a few suggestions to help make your trip to Island Return It Recycling Centre as simple as possible.
Make It A Habit
When you do the dishes at after dinner, make it a habit to use the rinse water to rinse out empty bottles and cans. Do them all together as you do other chores so that it doesn’t feel as though you’re always rinsing out the recycling.
A book called “Psycho-Cybernetics” first published in the 1970s suggests that if you repeat an action regularly for 21 days it will become a habit. While there is no clinical evidence based on controlled experiments to support this theory it has been repeated often enough that we feel obligated to mention it. Habit, I suppose.
A Dedicated Space
Find a spot in your home that is easily accessible, not in the way and large enough to store a Rubbermaid tote. You can either use that tote as your “Recycle” box or go a step further and create a recycling station with a tote for paper, one for plastics and another for refundable beverage containers.
You’ll be the envy of the neighborhood. Well, probably not but you will be organized and ready to recycle at a moment’s notice!
Mark Your Calendars
Much like the habit forming tip from earlier marking your calendar with a special day to recycle each month will help you remember.
“What should we do today?”
“It’s recycle day!”
If you have kids this is a great teaching moment you can repeat every month. Make a day of it, collect up your household recycling, bring it to Island Return It then go hiking, walk the dog, treat yourself to brunch or visit Grandma. You get the idea.
Organize as You Go
When you rinse your empty bottles and cans and then bring them to your household recycling station, take an extra moment to remove the caps, place the bottles upright and ready to be counted when you reach the depot. The more you can do before you arrive the quicker you’ll get out of here, refundable deposit cash in hand.
Save Your Pennies
Every time you get a cash refund from Island Return It put it in a piggy bank and save it for a rainy day. You’ll be amazed at how quickly it adds up and it might even provide the motivation needed to tackle that big box of recycling that you’ve been putting off all month.
